As the days warm up and become what feels like hours longer – I cannot help but want to clean, clean, clean. Spring is also a time of rebirth in the universe, making it easier to start new routines and create good habits. So let’s face it, your skin, does not look that great coming out of the hibernation of winter. It could use a little attention. Here are a few tips to spring clean your skin care routine.
-Check your products for freshness – most skin care has active ingredients that have a shelf life. There may be an expiration date on the package, or an indicator of how long the product will be active – generally 6-12 months from the time the package is opened.
-Clean your make-up brushes. Make-up brushes should be cleaned regularly, as oils, old make-up and dirt can build up making the brushes more likely to carry germs and cause break out.
-A very basic, bare bones skin care routine should include a cleanser, toner and moisturizer twice a day. If you have a solid routine, try adding in a new step. A great way to freshen your skin is to add an appropriate exfoliant a couple of days a week, a mask once a week, or a serum to treat trouble areas such as breakout, pigmentation or fine lines.
-Evaluate your current skin care. Do you like what you see in the mirror? If not, your skin care is lacking. A great way to kick off a new routine is by getting a facial. You start witha clean slate and depending on the condition of your skin, a road map to correct or maintain its condition. Take your current skin care with you to your appointment and have your esthetician help you decide what to replace and what you can do to have a more effective routine.
- Drink lots and lots of water. Like spring flowers your skin thrives on moisture, and in seasonal transition this is very important. Since you skin acts like a barrier, the more moisture it has, the more resilient it will be when you are out enjoying the warmer weather.
- Wear sunscreen every day! Summer, winter, fall and spring. Exposure to UV light is what causes ageing, not just sitting in the sun. The key to sunscreen is using it, find one you like and make it part of your morning routine.
