Jackson Hole Dining Guide: Cheap Eats

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

So, you go on vacation and end up spending a lot of money on food, especially when you are skiing all day and burning up calories as you are killing it on the hill. You’re hungry and it is also killing your bank account!

Live Well is here with a little insider information on how to fill your belly in Jackson Hole while keeping that wallet nice and fat!

Kinda a la New York Magazine’s “Cheap Eats” here’s our suggestion for eating well on a budget in Jackson Hole.

Well, we might as well kick it off with the cheapest deal in town. Two words: Cowboy Steakhouse (pictured above). Another collection of words: Burger.Beer. 5 Bucks! Unbeatable! Note: this special is from 5:30-7:30 only.

Cascade: Constantly keeping value in mind, Cascadeis offering a number of enticements in the “Cheap Eats” category. Monday brings 2 irresistible Buffalo Sliders and a PBR for $6 during apres ski. Wednesday means 1/2 off wings and Thursday isn’t exactly an eat, but you get 1/2 off a “ski-tini.” Sounds like a good trade-off.

Monday through Wednesday, Cascade dining room offers select entrees and a complimentary glass of house wine or a draft beer for $20! Call for more information and reservations. 307. 732.6932.

In town, a classic, old favorite, The Blue Lion, offers 20% off the entire bill if you dine before 6:30. 307-733-3912

Q Roadhouse has free wings on Saturdays and Sundays along with a two killer happy hours daily  and on every special ladies night on Saturdays. Call 307-739-0700 for more information.

More tips on eating cheap in and around JH next week. Stay tuned!

Rippin Around With Jackson Hole’s Rob LaPier

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Remember this guy from last week? Well, in addition to being a ripper (and local Powderhorn sponsored athlete), Rob LaPier is also a writer. Read on to hear Rob’s perspective on things whilst rocketing over a van in a parking lot near you!

When the storm finally stopped we were all in quite a panic. The unfortunate in-bounds fatality and devastating slide that partially destroyed the Couloir restaurant has been a tragic reminder that nature rules. This year’s snowpack prompts us that no matter what goals one may have on the “to do” list, the mountains dictate the window of opportunity.

So instead of using December’s full moon illumination to venture into the untracked backcountry we did the opposite. A crew of snow enthusiasts gathered at one of the flattest places in Teton County for a night of skiing in the Stilson Parking lot.

My friend Chris Tatsuno, of www.Christatsuno.com, has been living out of his ’89 Chevy Van for about three years now.  He is a soulful ski bum who is truly free to roam… wherever he can afford to on his raft guiding salary.  When Chris heard about the holiday storm cycle in the Tetons he headed to Jackson to find a temporary parking lot for the, ‘motor home.’  When the storm calmed down he packed up and headed out of town. His van, however, was on her last leg and broke down just south of Hoback Junction. Being a good friend, my trusty ’95 Toyota Tacoma and I came to the rescue.  We pulled the van to the Stilson lot, a temporary resting place before giving it a proper send-off.

After many cold nights and well over 100,000 miles together Chris was sad to leave behind his companion but the prospects of a new(er) van were calling his name. It was hard to see him depressed for a few days but alas the light bulb sparked.  In all the years of traveling he had always wanted to jump the van. If this was truly the end of the Chevy’s days then it was high time to ‘jib’ the van before leaving it for dead.

Chris used a fleet of diggers to sculpt a jump and pile snow on the passenger side to cushion the fall. Thanks to a few curious locals we were able to rally a snowmobile and driver to complete the tow package. Most funerals cost between $5-10K, Tatsuno was total invested 24 PBR cans.

That night everyone took a few turns tapping Chris’ old girl.  I am not sure if it was the smell of two-stroke, the nearly flat landings and tons of carnage, or the gangsta rap music in the background, but I was somehow reminded of my younger days in Colorado. I almost forgot that I moved to Jackson for the Tetons non-terrain park scene.’ I can only imagine what the frequent bus drivers were thinking when they saw a crew of 15 skiers illuminated by headlights and a snowmobile revving in the far corner of the lot.

That evening we made the most of a full moon night bid the van farewell. Chris’ enthusiasm reminded me that no matter what genre of riding one falls into, or what mountain town you call home, we all share a passion for the winter. To all those who have loved and lost (a vehicle), raise your glasses to Chris Tatsuno, his van and undying devotion to life in the mountains. Cheers.

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

For all the warriors out there-whether you classify yourself as weekend, weekday or…well… just weak from beating yourself up on the mountain during your visit, here is the ultimate opportunity for recovery.

This curious little satchel is actually filled with restorative herbs like turmeric, mint and lemongrass and once heated and applied to the body, they are completely energizing. Traditionally known as Poultice, the solid sack has long been used as an accompaniment to an ancient form of Thai massage. This particular form of Thai ritual massage was originally implemented to restore warriors after a long day of battle. Kinda like you apres ski right? Maybe a stretch but sorta. Well, it is the ultimate pick me up and is oh-so hurtful and blissful simultaneously. Guarantied to awaken the warrior within.

This unique massage is offered at Solitude Spa in Teton Mountain. Massage therapist are trained in this ancient Thai ritual and are thrilled to pulverize, uh, pamper your every limb. Call Solitude Spa for more information: 307.732.6865

Jackson Hole Eye Candy

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

In lieu of our traditional showcase of Terra Resort Group “Top Ten Thursdays”, we decided to lighten the mood a bit with a little levitation…Jackson Style!

Struggling with trying to spice up your nightlife? Why not just roll out your favorite skid van and huck over it? Duh.

Our favorite local freeskier pal Rob LaPier (top photo) provided these sicky shots (courtesy of Julie Weinbergerphotography) showcasing how he and his friends choose to unwind at night. According to these guys, it’s easy as getting off the bus at the Stilson Lot, eyeing your favorite van, pushing it to the nearest launch pad and pulling out your best spread eagle.

Photographer Julie Weinberger took these awesome photos of Rob (pictured at top) and other Jackson Hole riders and we thank her and the athletes for getting us psyched to uh, hit up the kiddie terrain park at JHMR. We will pass on night time and parking lots for now :)

‘Tis The Season To Give Back for Terra Resort Group

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

*On Friday, December 11, TRG employees gathered to assist Habitat for Humanity Teton County chapter in the construction of a brand new South Jackson Home. Here TRG President Jamie Yarrow re-visits this touching day of community service and camaraderie.

When you think of a “Dream House,” most imagine images featured on MTV Cribs or Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.  This Holiday season, members of our Terra Resort Group Community Volunteer Team were able to participate in the building of a real “Dream House”.

With all that is happening in the housing market, it was a thrill for us to assist Habitat for Humanity  with a winter build right here in Jackson Hole.  You couldn’t ask to partner with a more thoughtful organization, and our TRG team came pumped up for the challenge.

I have worked on Habitat homes in California, Florida and now Wyoming, but last year I found out what contributing to Habitat really means.  While building a house with a team of ladies from Climb Wyoming, I stood in a partially finished home with the builder Trace, Colleen Cherrett from Climb and one of the inspiring Climb mother’s who was about to be a recipient of a new Habitat Home.  As Trace pointed out the HVAC system, I heard Colleen mention to the mother that this was what her home was going to look like.  It was the word ‘home’ that caught me; it was not said as a place to sleep or where you might hang a few pictures.  The word was uttered with greater texture and purpose, it was a place where this single mother would raise her son, where a sense of ownership and accomplishment would arise from a first house, where roots would begin to grow.  As I turned to to the two of them, they were already embracing in a hug made real by tears of joy and disbelief.

In that moment I realized what Climb Wyoming and Habitat for Humanity were doing.  They were not just providing shelter, they were providing a starting point, a foundation for building self respect and a place truly called home.  I saw that a dream house does not start with having everything you want, but more so with place that gives the things a person needs to start a sense of worth.  This house was where dreams would begin and give the dreamer a sense of possibility.

Fast forward to today; watching the people I work with raise hammers and pound nails to build that dream for someone they may never meet, inspired me beyond words.  It was cold and we were hanging insulation and shingles.  The team built with such energy and passion, it was obvious to me they all got what took me that moment in the Climb house a year ago to discover.  It was as if they could see the children playing in their first yard, a parent cooking in their first kitchen, holiday lights being hung on the roof line they were now building.   As the President of Terra Resort Group I was humbled and honored to have the privilege of working alongside a group of people with such care and character.  Best part, I get to work with them every day!  Thank you TRG Volunteers.
