Boy Scout Built and Approved: Teton Pass Arrow Trail

Monday, August 25th, 2008
Arrow Trail Looking South on Teton Pass

Instead of taking the usual left headed out Phillips for a mountain-bike or run, head right for the new Arrow Trail on Teton Pass and enjoy the ride.

Constructed by the boy scouts national honor society known as the Order of the Arrow, the seven-mile singletrack is a welcome addition to the Teton Pass trail system. The ride out and back is beautifully smooth, bouncy and navigable for most any intermediate rider and provides new access to more established pass runs like Phillips Canyon.

If this new trail isn’t interesting enough, the story behind the building is and knowing it almost completes the appeal of the experience. From July 26 to August 2, the Order of the Arrow completed the vision and work of Teton Pass trails coordinator Chris Peck and Harlan Hottenstein. Born last fall, their brainchild saw pre-construction in the Spring through the hard prep of Peck and Walt Berling. After building bridges and several wide switchbacks, America’s best Boy Scouts stepped in to buff it out. The end result is a highly accessible and enjoyable trail offering a great place to get out on Teton Pass for just about anyone.

Trail Building Tactics

Trail Building Tactics

Since the inception of a 2004 trail plan for Teton Pass, Arrow is the first of what will be many added routes. In past years, Jackson Hole’s Teton Freedom Riders have been busy implementing downhill mountain biking features on Lithium and Jimmy’s Mom (to name a few) in the hopes of promoting technically improved trails for Jackson’s cyclists . Whatever your creed, either cycle or foot, the Arrow trail is a good opportunity to get out and exercise in Jackson’s nearby wilderness.

P.S. It’s Important to live well, but it’s also great to be SICK. Check out a downhill run on the pass.
